Birmingham Children's Hospital (Profile)
The Heart Unit at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Trust provides a regional cardiac service for the West Midlands, a catchment area of about 5.5 million providing care for children with congenital & acquired heart disease. The unit sees over 7000 outpatients per year at BCH and provides an outreach service to an additional 16 local hospitals where a further 199 clinics are provided each year.
The department performs over 7000 echocardiograms per year, performs over 550 cardiac catheters (of which more than 60% are interventional) and the surgical programme performs over 450 operations per year (360-400 open heart operations) as well as 50 – 60 adult congenital operations at the QE Hospital, Birmingham.
In addition, we also provide a supra-regional service for several complex types of heart surgery including:
Univentricular hearts (Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome & variants)
Neonatal surgery
CCTGA – congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries
Complex pulmonary atresia (pulmonary atresia with MAPCAs)
BCH is a world renowned centre in these specialist fields and has produced over 60 publications in medical journals on these subjects since 2000. The centre also provides for a complete interventional cardiology service including device closure of VSDs and an electro-physiology (EP) programme. Over a period of time, we have built a comprehensive congenital cardiac service integrating care from the foetus through to adulthood.
This is achieved through:
· Foetal cardiac services integrated with the Feto-maternal Unit at the Birmingham Women’s Hospital.
· Well established Adult Congenital cardiac Service based at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust with regular meetings and shared cardiology & cardiac surgical activities between the two units.
· Weekly meetings planning patient treatments.
· Monthly reviews of mortality and morbidity.
· Active research and audit program including peer reviewed publications, and national and international presentations
· The unit also comprises four liaison nurses, (one supported by a grant form the British Heart Foundation) who provide a key role between the families, and the staff in the Heart Unit. They provide an invaluable service across the whole spectrum of contacts with the families ranging from ante-natal service counselling, supporting families whose children have been admitted to, children at home and at school.
· Dedicated Heart Outpatients and Heart Investigation Unit.
· Joint peripheral clinics providing access for all the paediatric units in our region.
· Inpatient services at the hospital are provided on two wards, one dedicated to children less than 6 months of age, and one for the older children.
(Both wards have established High Dependency Units to look after those children who need more intensive care, especially during the peri-operative period).
· A dedicated team of cardiac anaesthetists and intensivists.
· A 20 (19 funded) bedded Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.
