Cardiff - University Hospital of Wales (Profile)

The Paediatric Cardiac Unit at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) was established in 1991. Between 1991-1998 the unit offered a complete range of catheter and surgical interventions. After the departure of the unit’s congenital cardiac surgeon in 1998, most catheter and surgical interventions in congenital cardiac patients have been undertaken in Bristol. A small number of cases are referred for intervention in Birmingham or London. Emergency balloon atrial septostomy may be carried out in situations where the patient’s life is at risk with the support of the Bristol interventional team.

The paediatric cardiac consultants oversee investigations and inpatient care on the UHW site. Outreach outpatient care is delivered throughout South and West Wales. The Cardiff consultants have a close working relationship with paediatricians with expertise in cardiology across the Welsh Paediatric Cardiovascular Network and the congenital cardiac team in Bristol.

The Adult Congenital Heart Disease Unit at the University Hospital of Wales is part of the Cardiac Services Directorate. The adult congenital service provides care via extensive outreach clinics throughout South and West Wales. Inpatient care is delivered in UHW, along with a full range of diagnostic facilities, including transoesophageal echocardiography, coronary angiography, nuclear cardiology, cardiac electrophysiology and cardiovascular radiology. Cardiac intervention is offered in the form of transcatheter closure of persistent foramen ovale and atrial septal defect, radiofrequency ablation of cardiac arrhythmias, device therapy for heart failure and life-threatening arrhythmias, and selected cardiac operations. There are close links with supra-regional centres in Bristol, Birmingham and London
.
